Classic Construction pouring the footings. Green impact: Reusable forms, all excavated topsoil to remain on site. Flyash is added to the concrete mix. (min 40%)
Flyash increases the R-value of concrete as well as the strength. It is also a efficient use of coal bi-product. The Flyash Revolution, making better concrete using less cement.

Today, (6/8/09) we are installing 2" rigid foam (1" is used typically,= R-5) on the exterior of the foundation which will provide an insulating value of R-10. Green Impact: Insulating on the exterior of the foundation is typically thought to be the best way to insulate a foundation wall. Reducing the potential for condensation and corresponding growth of mold while increasing the livability of below grade-rooms.

This picture shows the 2" rigid foam installed and 2 of the 4 planter boxes at the front of the home. The planter boxes start at the footings to ensure they will never move.

1st day of framing today 6/15/09. Just a few Green influences regarding framing: Sub-floor material with no added urea-formaldehyde. All lumber must be local, up to 500 miles away. Green impact: This reduces energy used in transportation and helps in stimulating local economies and jobs. Framing will last about 2 weeks.

We have installed a minimum of 4" gravel on top of basement soil before any other floooring work is done. Green impact: This measure provides capillary break and drainage medium for water, water vapor, and other gasses. This is also the first the first step in the radon mitigation system.
